How much caffeine are you consuming?

Did you know that there is an amount of caffeine that is too much for the growing brain of a teenager?  We did some research and have asked students to examine the sources of caffeine in their diets and calculate the number of servings that they actually consume.

Other caffeine investigations

Do caffeinated drinks have similar amounts of jolt? (2021) - We found this interesting caffeine infographic at visual.ly. Wonderings? How many McDonalds coffees do I need to get the same amount of caffeine that I would get in a Starbucks coffee? What is the whole circle worth?

Largest coffee, new world record (2019) - The world record for the largest cup of coffee was recently set (see picture above).  In this activity students explore scale, similar figures, volume and measurement as they estimate the amount of coffee that this record-sized mug holds.

How much should the 40-oz size cost? (2019) - We found this chalkboard menu at a coffee shop recently. The shop had prices for the small, medium and large cappuccinos and they will also make you 40-ounce cappuccino but they haven't listed the price. What do you think that the price should be? In this task, students have the opportunity to discover and define a linear relationship.

Is this possible? (2012) - Brian Shoemaker, a Newton, MA mathematics teacher, saw this Dunkin Donuts Mazda traveling down the road.  He wondered if that size coffee cup could really have coffee in it.  Wouldn’t the car rock back on its rear bumper? How much would that much coffee even cost.
