Fast Growing Plant

Students look into a plant that doubles in height every month and work out a rule for its height at any point, then run that rule backwards to discover why a positive number raised to a negative exponent gives a fraction, not a negative number.  It's a great introduction to negative exponents, with a real-world context that builds powers of 2 and exponential growth along the way.
